Southport

Evolving out of a bathing shelter built by William Sutton in 1792 followed by The South Port Hotel in 1797, Southport quickly grew into a popular resort. It was also another regular summer destination for us when we were kids. Although a bit tatty around the edges, the grandiose Victorian buildings along Lord Street with its preserved old style sweet shops, butchers and tea house, it still drew the crowds to its vast expanse of beach and funfair even in 1987.

Commissioned by Sefton Council and exhibited at the Atkinson Art Gallery, Southport, 1987.
