Somewhere Called Home

The following is an extract from Creative Camera 10/1986:

"There are very few people living on the streets of Liverpool, and that number is on the decline, mainly through the efforts of a few caring bodies based around the city... The City Council's Urban Regeneration Strategy has placed two hostels under compulsory purchase orders; the buildings are due for demolition. Against this background Stephen (sic) Conlan looks at the homeless hostels to highlight  their importance to the residents i.e. ... food, a bed, companionship and stability. 'At each place I visited I spent some time explaining myself to the residents before taking any pictures... I wanted the pictures to tell their story, to represent them, if I were to take the pictures completely candid without  the person's prior consent, the results would have been something else.' Interviews with people in the photographs accompany the images..."

Commissioned by Open Eye, Liverpool and exhibited in the gallery in October/November 1986.
